In an unusual phenomenon, there was nothing requiring my attention this morning and I was able to lay late in bed!
Unheard of, I know.
As I lay there, contemplating getting up, I began to listen. I heard the sound of the fridge clicking on and off, the sound of the cats frolicking and looking for their breakfast, the birds chirping outside our window, the wind blowing briskly through the yard. I also heard the sound of feet moving through the house.
I don’t know if you’ve ever listened to your family walk but each one in our family has a very distinctive footfall. Jeff is solid, determined. He goes everywhere with a purpose. Matthew thumps and knocks around… he’s a bit clumsy so if we hear things falling down, we know it’s Matthew. Zachaeus is somewhat like a hurricane or tornado blowing through. He has so much energy – it is not uncommon to only see a glimpse of him as he whizzes by. Hannah Grace is light on her feet. She is soft and gentle and often you don’t even hear her coming. Abigail’s footfall is generally covered by the sound of her giggles. Christianna – a herd of elephants – much like Zachaeus.
Each one is recognizable by the steps that they take. I wonder how many people look at me or listen to me or see me coming and identify me by the steps that I take and the decisions that I make. How often is my testimony affected by the things I accept or do? Do my footsteps reflect my walk with the LORD?
But he knows the way that I take;
when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
My feet have closely followed his steps;
I have kept to his way without turning aside.
I have not departed from the commands of his lips;
I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.
My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not stumbled.
The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;
Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.
1 Peter 2:21
To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
