Have you ever heard someone say that God can’t be a loving God because He lets bad things happen? How about that the Bible is full of contradictions so it just cannot be true? Or perhaps, “He just doesn’t care about me.”
Last night, we were at a small group study and one of the topics that came up was that in order to understand God, we need to take the time to get to know Him. The example was given that if you go into your doctor’s office and list off your ailments and complaints and then say goodbye without listening to what your doctor has to say to you then you won’t have any idea of what you should be doing in order to be healthy. The same thing applies to your relationship with the Lord. If your prayers are a list of what’s wrong and what you want but you don’t take the time to listen to what He has to say to you then there is very little value in the relationship.
So, how can we get to know the Lord? Well, how did you get to know your best friend or your spouse? The answer is pretty straight forward. In order to get to know someone, you need to spend time with them. Spending time together is more than just being in the same place once a week. You need to talk to your friend and you need to listen to them when they talk to you.
How does God talk to us? I would like to suggest six different ways that God communicates with us. Over the next several blogs, I’m going to share what God has revealed to me about how to build a meaningful relationship with Him.
1. God communicates with me through His Word: the Scriptures are deliberate instructions and encouragements that God has provided in order to help us understand His expectations of us.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God
